History

The story of Floyd Medical Center began in the 1930s when Dr. W.H. Lewis and a group of community leaders campaigned for the Floyd County Board of Roads and Revenue to build a county hospital for the citizens of Rome, Georgia.

Floyd County Hospital opened its doors on July 4, 1942, admitting 27 patients in its first week. By 1946, 808 babies were born at the hospital, and by the end of its first decade, 42,356 patients had been admitted with 6,178 births recorded. The hospital expanded steadily through the following decades, growing from 70 beds to a full regional referral center.
